Scheduled
Single-Sign On (SSO) authentication has been available on some of our services for some time now (particularly lists.w3.org).

On Monday December 2, 2024 we are going to switch authentication to SSO on our main content servers (www.w3.org).

In SSO, login means that instead of getting an authentication pop-up prompt on your browser, your browser will be redirected to an authentication form on https://auth.w3.org/.

SSO authentication on www.w3.org has been available since a while too, but it has been limited to the staff. With this change, we are expanding its coverage for everyone.

After the roll-out of this change, HTTP Basic Authentication will only be required in a few isolated cases on www.w3.org.

Note that some of our services such as wikis and blogs use their own authentication systems and are not included in our deployment of SSO.
